Welcome students

Cultural Reference Logs

This semester you will be reading several short stories, in our international anthology and elsewhere, written by a variety of contemporary writers. There will be cultural references in these stories that are vague or unfamiliar to you. You are to keep an ongoing journal that records these cultural references, their contexts, and a summary of your research journey to explain their meanings. For this purpose, we will all create these Cultural Reference Blogs. Have fun with this; learn something new; be creative.
For example, in Ishiguro's A Family Supper, the very first word, "fugu," made me curious, so I went to "dogpile" search engine and looked it up. Wow. It turns out fugu is a very special delicacy to eat in Japan because in addition to being delicious, if it is not prepared correctly and CAREFULLY, you will die painfully after you eat it.
